Operation Medical is going to be conducting a surgical/healthcare mission in partnership with World Camp, Inc. in Malawi Africa from October 3 through October 10, 2014 in Lilongwe, Malawi at the Kamuzu Central Hospital. The team will be led by Dr. Baker Henson, one of Operation Medical’s Advisory Board members and one of the founders of World Camp, Inc. World Camp, Inc. is a non-profit organization working in Malawi, Africa and focuses on HIG/AIDS education.
Malawi, nicknamed “The Warm Heart of Africa”, is in southeast Africa and is borderd by Zambil, Tanzania and Mozambique. With a population of over 16 million people, Malawi has only 31 registered surgeons and is plagued with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Its people have a low life expectance and high infant mortality.
Kamuzu Central Hospital is the tertiary referral center for the central region of Malawi and services about 5 million people. Estimates of the hospital’s size range from 600 to 1,000 beads with actual occupancy always exceeding intended occupancy. The hospital has three general surgeons, five floors, four ooperation theatres, one ICU with four beds and a radiology department with plain films and ultrasound. The only pathologist in Malawi works about 20 miles to the south of Malawi.
